You booked your first deep cleaning with a new company. They quoted you a price but did not say how long they would be in your house. Now it is the morning of and you are wondering if you should reschedule the contractor coming at 1pm. Will they still be there?

Here is what to actually expect, broken down by home size, crew size, and home condition.

The quick answer

For most Saint Johns and Jacksonville homes, a first-time deep cleaning takes a two-person crew between 4 and 7 hours. That assumes the home has been lived in normally and has not had a professional deep clean in the last 6 months.

A larger or heavier-traffic home can run longer. A smaller or recently-cleaned home can run shorter. The good news is, a reputable cleaning company will quote you a flat rate, not by the hour, so the time variance does not change your price.

Deep cleaning timeline by home size

These ranges are based on hundreds of first-time deep cleans we have done across Northeast Florida.

Home Size2-Person Crew3-Person Crew
Under 1,500 sqft3 to 4 hours2 to 3 hours
1,500 to 2,500 sqft4 to 5 hours3 to 4 hours
2,500 to 3,500 sqft5 to 7 hours3.5 to 5 hours
3,500 to 4,500 sqft7 to 9 hours5 to 6 hours
4,500+ sqftSplit across two days6 to 8 hours

Some companies will split a very large deep clean across two days to keep the work fresh. We do this for homes over 4,500 sqft when the condition warrants it.

What slows a deep clean down

The size of the home is the starting point. These factors stretch the timeline:

Heavy bathroom buildup

The biggest single time variable. A bathroom that has not been deep cleaned in over a year can add 30 to 60 minutes to the visit. Soap scum, hard-water deposits on glass, and tarnished fixtures all need product dwell time and elbow grease.

Kitchen condition

If we are cleaning inside the oven, inside the refrigerator, behind the stove, and inside cabinets, that is roughly 90 minutes of kitchen work alone. Skipping any of those drops the time but also drops the deep-clean value.

Floor type

Hardwood and luxury vinyl plank floors mop fast. Tile with deep grout lines needs more attention. Carpet through the whole home means heavier vacuuming and possibly spot treatment.

Pets

Pet hair on upholstery and in HVAC vents adds time. Most pet homes need an extra 30 to 60 minutes of vacuuming and detail work.

Walls, doors, and baseboards

If walls have visible marks, if cabinet fronts have grease, if baseboards have caked dust, all of these add real time. A baseboard wipe through a 3,000 sqft home is about 45 minutes of work on its own.

How long since the last professional clean

A home that gets professionally cleaned every two weeks needs about 60 percent of the deep clean time a home that has never been professionally cleaned needs. Our quoting accounts for this.

What speeds a deep clean up

  • The home is empty during the work (no one to clean around)
  • Floors are clear of toys and items (no pickup time)
  • Kitchen counters are clear of dishes
  • Pets are confined or out of the home
  • A recent deep clean is on file with another company

If you can prep these things, you make the team's job faster and your home gets a better result.

Crew size and what to expect

Most companies in Saint Johns and Jacksonville run two-person crews. Some run three-person crews on first-time deep cleans to wrap in a single visit. Both work fine. The job either takes longer with a smaller crew or finishes faster with a larger one.

What you should ask before booking:

  • "How many cleaners will be at my home?"
  • "What is your expected arrival window?"
  • "What time should I expect you to be done?"

A real answer is specific. "Two cleaners, arrival between 9 and 9:30am, expected to finish between 2 and 3pm." That is what you want to hear.

What deep cleaning actually covers

Deep cleaning is not just "regular cleaning but slower." It includes work that is skipped in standard recurring visits.

Deep cleaning timeline broken down by area:

AreaTime on a 2,500 sqft home
Kitchen detail60 to 90 minutes
Bathrooms (each one)30 to 45 minutes
Bedrooms (each one)15 to 25 minutes
Living and dining areas30 to 45 minutes
Floors (whole home)45 to 60 minutes
Baseboards, vents, doors45 to 60 minutes

That adds up to roughly 5 hours of total work for a 2,500 sqft 3-bed 2-bath home with a two-person crew. The crew is splitting tasks, so wall-clock time is closer to 2.5 hours per cleaner.

Why the first visit always takes longer

If you stay with a cleaning company recurring, here is the pattern you should expect:

  1. First visit (deep clean): 4 to 7 hours on a 2,500 sqft home
  2. Second visit (still deep, lighter): 3 to 5 hours
  3. Third visit onward (recurring standard): 2 to 3 hours

The first visit is doing months or years of catch-up work. The third visit onward is just maintenance. Pricing reflects this.

Should you be home?

You do not need to be. Most clients give us access instructions and head out for the day or run errands. We send a "starting now" and "wrapping up" text so you know when we are on-site.

If you prefer to be home, that is fine. Just give us space in the rooms we are cleaning. Pets are easier if they are in one room with you.

Quick checklist before the cleaner arrives

  • Clear floors of toys, shoes, and items
  • Clear kitchen counters of dishes
  • Pick up bathroom counters
  • Confine pets if they are anxious around strangers
  • Make sure we have access (key, code, or someone home)
  • Note any spots that need extra attention in a quick text or email

Frequently asked questions

Will the cleaners take a lunch break in my home? Usually no. Most crews bring water bottles and snacks they eat outside or in the truck during a quick break. We respect your space.

Can I shorten a deep clean to fit a smaller window? Yes, but we will recommend trimming specific tasks (skip inside-fridge, skip behind-stove, etc.) rather than rushing the whole job. Rushing a deep clean defeats the point.

Do I pay more if the deep clean runs long? No. We quote a flat price based on your home. If the work runs longer than expected, that is on us, not on you. Hourly pricing creates an incentive to rush, and we do not want that.

How long does a recurring standard cleaning take after the deep clean? For a 2,500 sqft home with a two-person crew, expect 2 to 3 hours per visit on the recurring schedule.
