The most common question we get from prospective clients in Saint Johns and Jacksonville is some version of: "How often should I really be having my house cleaned?"
There is no single right answer. The right frequency depends on the size of your home, how many people and pets live there, your lifestyle, your budget, and how much you genuinely enjoy or dread cleaning yourself.
Here is the honest framework we use to help clients pick the right frequency, with real-world examples and what each schedule actually feels like.
The four standard frequencies
Most professional cleaning companies offer four recurring schedules. The differences are real and the right choice depends on your specific situation.
| Frequency | Visit Duration | Cost per Year (2,500 sqft) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 2 to 3 hours | $7,800 to $11,700 | High traffic, kids, pets, work-from-home families |
| Bi-weekly | 2 to 3 hours | $3,900 to $5,850 | Most dual-income households |
| Monthly | 3 to 4 hours | $2,160 to $3,300 | Couples without kids, empty nesters, second homes |
| Quarterly deep | 5 to 7 hours | $1,400 to $2,400 | Tidy households who handle daily upkeep |

What each schedule actually feels like
Numbers are useful. Lived experience is more useful. Here is what each schedule actually looks like in a real home.
Weekly cleaning
Your home stays at a near-permanent "ready for company" state. Counters are always clear, floors always look freshly mopped, bathrooms always smell clean. You forget what dust looks like.
Best for: Families with 2+ kids, large dogs, allergies, frequent guests, work-from-home professionals on video calls, hosts of recurring social gatherings.
The math: $150 to $225 per week. Most expensive option but the quality-of-life impact is dramatic.
The downside: You feel slightly guilty about how much you spend on cleaning. Some families also find weekly visits to be too frequent to give the cleaner enough to do (the home stays clean enough that visits get short).
Bi-weekly cleaning
The "Goldilocks" frequency that 60 to 70 percent of our clients choose. Your home is genuinely clean for the first week after a visit. Week two starts to show normal wear but is still presentable. You feel the visit is needed by the time it happens but never desperate.
Best for: Dual-income families, single professionals with active lives, households with 1 pet, families with school-age kids, most Saint Johns and Jacksonville homes.
The math: $150 to $225 every two weeks. Best cost-to-result ratio for most households.
The downside: There is a noticeable difference between days 1 and 14. If you have visitors arriving on day 13, you may want to do a quick wipe-down yourself.
Monthly cleaning
You handle weekly upkeep yourself. The monthly visit catches up on everything you skipped and does the deeper work (baseboards, ceiling fans, vent grilles) that does not need weekly attention.
Best for: Couples without kids, empty nesters, tidy households, second-home owners, retirees with time but who do not enjoy cleaning.
The math: $180 to $275 per month. Lowest recurring cost.
The downside: You are responsible for daily and weekly upkeep yourself. If you skip your weekly routine, the home will feel dirty by week three. Monthly works best for genuinely tidy households.
Quarterly deep cleaning
No recurring cleaning at all. Every 3 months a professional deep clean resets the entire home. You handle everything else yourself.
Best for: Tidy minimalists, single residents, people who actually enjoy cleaning, very small homes, second homes used a few times per year.
The math: $350 to $600 per quarter, or $1,400 to $2,400 per year.
The downside: Quarterly is enough to keep a home from getting bad but not enough to keep it consistently clean. You absorb all the weekly maintenance.
How to figure out which schedule fits you
Five questions that determine the right frequency for your home:
1. How many people and pets live there?
| Household Composition | Recommended Frequency |
|---|---|
| Single resident, no pets | Monthly or quarterly |
| Couple, no pets | Monthly or bi-weekly |
| Couple with 1 pet | Bi-weekly |
| Family with kids (school age) | Bi-weekly or weekly |
| Family with kids + pets | Weekly |
| Family with toddler + pets | Weekly |
| Multi-generational household | Weekly |
2. How much do you work from home?
Working from home changes the math significantly. Constant presence creates constant micro-mess (lunch crumbs, coffee mugs, daily floor traffic). Two work-from-home adults usually need bi-weekly minimum.
3. Do you have allergies or asthma in the home?
If anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivity, weekly or bi-weekly is medically meaningful. Dust accumulation makes allergies measurably worse, especially during Northeast Florida pollen seasons. See our Jacksonville allergy season guide.
4. Do you entertain frequently?
If you have guests over more than twice a month, weekly or bi-weekly removes the pre-event cleaning panic. The "I need to clean before they get here" stress is one of the most-cited reasons clients upgrade from monthly to bi-weekly.
5. What is your budget tolerance?
Be honest with yourself. If weekly cleaning would create financial stress, that defeats the purpose. Better to do bi-weekly and feel comfortable than weekly and feel pinched.
The seasonal adjustment
Most households benefit from adjusting frequency seasonally. The pattern that works for many Northeast Florida families:
| Time of Year | Recommended Adjustment |
|---|---|
| March to May (pollen season) | Increase by one level (bi-weekly to weekly) |
| June to August (humidity) | Maintain regular schedule |
| September to October (mild ragweed) | Maintain |
| November to December (holidays, guests) | Increase by one level |
| January to February (slow season) | Maintain or decrease |
Many clients run weekly in spring and fall, bi-weekly the rest of the year. The cost averages out to roughly bi-weekly.
What about a one-time deep clean instead
If recurring cleaning is not in your budget, the single highest-leverage move is a quarterly or twice-yearly deep clean. Two well-done deep cleans per year ($800 to $1,400 total) plus consistent daily upkeep beats inconsistent monthly cleaning.

How to get started without committing
Most cleaning companies (including ours) let you trial different frequencies before committing:
- Start with a one-time deep clean. This sets a baseline and gives you a feel for the company.
- Try a single recurring visit. Book one bi-weekly visit at the standard rate.
- Switch frequency after 6 to 8 weeks. By then, you know whether you need more or less.
Avoid committing to a long-term contract on your first visit. A company that requires it is a yellow flag.
What changes when you start
The first few weeks of recurring cleaning involve adjustment for both sides:
Week 1: Calibration
The first visit (deep clean) sets the baseline. You will notice things you forgot were dirty.
Week 2 to 4: The settling period
You realize how much mental space the cleaning was taking up. Some clients report better sleep and more weekend energy.
Month 2 to 3: New normal
Your home stays at a consistent level of clean. You stop thinking about it. Friends visiting comment that your place always looks great.
Month 6+: The compound benefit
Surfaces that were never deep-cleaned get attention each visit. Old buildup is gone. The home is genuinely cleaner than it has been in years.
What we recommend
If you are starting from scratch, we recommend:
- Book a first-visit deep clean ($300 to $700 depending on home size)
- Start with bi-weekly recurring at $150 to $225 per visit
- Adjust to weekly or monthly after 2 months based on how it feels
- Add an annual whole-home deep clean reset in early spring or late summer
This pattern works for the majority of dual-income Northeast Florida households.

Frequently asked questions
Will weekly cleaning really make that much difference? For high-traffic homes, yes. Weekly visits prevent buildup. For low-traffic homes, weekly is overkill and bi-weekly delivers nearly the same result for half the cost.
Can I do every 3 weeks instead of bi-weekly? Most cleaning companies do not offer 3-week schedules because it creates calendar conflicts (3 weeks does not divide evenly into a month). Bi-weekly or monthly are the standard intermediate options.
Does frequency affect price per visit? Yes. Weekly visits cost slightly less per visit than bi-weekly, which cost less than monthly, which cost less than one-time. The pricing reflects that less-frequent visits require more time to catch up.
What about deep cleans for special occasions? A pre-holiday or pre-party deep clean adds about $300 to $500 to your regular schedule. Most clients schedule one in mid-November for Thanksgiving and one in mid-March for spring entertaining.
How do I know if I should increase or decrease frequency? If you find yourself doing significant cleaning yourself between visits, increase frequency. If you find the cleaner finishes faster than expected and the home barely needed attention, decrease frequency.
